This stunning "Iceberg" plate designed by Rudolf Jurnikl for Rudolfova Hut, Sklo Union (Czechoslovakia, now Czechia) in the 1970s, features beautiful curves and spikes that play with the light in a room. The piece combine geometric simplicity with a touch of complexity, giving it an elegant yet striking presence.
A robust, heavy and striking centrepiece with the signature sloping, spiky rims that are tactile and pleasing to the touch. About Sklo Union and Rudolf Jurnikl: Sklo Union was established in 1965 by the Czechoslovakian government to unite glass manufacturers like Rudolfova Hut, Libochovice, and Rosice under one cooperative. The organization became a hub for bold, modernist glass design in the 1960s and 1970s, driven by prominent designers such as Rudolf Jurnikl, František Vízner, and Pavel Pánek. Their work represented a significant departure from traditional glass styles, focusing on innovative forms, optics, and surface textures inspired by nature.
Jurnikl's "Iceberg" series is a prime example of this new wave of glass design, celebrated for its sculptural qualities and minimalist aesthetic. Sklo Union thrived until the early 1990s, when the Velvet Revolution led to the dissolution of the cooperative, and the individual factories resumed independent operations.
